Our first step into what we regard as the next stage of overlanding. A place where we can satisfy Albertos' death wish on desert trails and get rid of him once and for all. A far away place on our doorstep. The mecca for many adventure travellers.
In Alberto's mind a far away, exotic and unexplored slice of dust and rock for us to explore. In Pietro's imaginarium the place where he will find his soul between dunes and streets of crowded cities. Filippo... Filippo thinks its a completely different planet we will reach by space ship (ferry) where he will become bemused by all he sees.
Time will tell if any of our projections come true. In the meantime we fret to prepare for our biggest expedition to date.

Preparation for the Gates of Africa Expedition is well under way. Destination Adventure. The Ergs, the cities, the Atlas. The culture ,the people, the food. The silence and roar of independent travel. We study and build our next expedition listening to music, getting our hands greasy and drinking coffee.
Open and flexible to the inevitable change of plans, our idea is to trade mark our Expedtion. Completing a full circle. Exploring the inner country and deserts and jumping into the Ocean. We want to visit ancient imperial Moroccan Cities, the Atlas mountain range and Cedar forest, the Magnificent city of Chefchaouen, the Atlantic coast and Sahara Desert.

ITENERARYUnlimited in our options we will pick up many books and go on a vote considering all options available. We are budgeting in 7,000 km of fuel and three weeks plus of dry foot travel. Departure date is not yet set. It will be between September and October. It would allow us to get away from the heat and hordes of tourists and, according to a local, the crazy locals!
Alberto is dying for desert driving and is learning Arabic. Pietro is silently fervent to visit towns and cities and witness the vast open country. Filippo is already giggling just thinking of the assortment of amusing and stupid things we'll do... oh of course... Alberto is worried as per usual; or as he would say "you gotta respect murphy" so he's working hard on Moka to ensure we don't end up on news papers for the first and last time. |

S N O R K E L & P R E F I L T E RWe're not exactly looking into fording or deep water wading rather for our 4 cylinder to breathe cleaner and fresher air. That's why we opted to mount a raised air intake a.k.a snorkel.
Alberto knocked that out of the ball park for a home run for just 130€ shipped *cough* plus 40€ since a tool broke *cough*. The Cyclone Pre Filter is in the Mail and we'll smack that on the moment it gets here! |
S U S P E N S I O NHappy days empty wallet. Alberto really balled out on Mokas new suspension. A full overhaul of Old Man Emu (ARB) shocks and springs. Careful and months of research for more affordable, load specific and heritage carrying suspension set ups all paths led to OME.
If you live or are stranded in Italy or europe get yours here! Why? we do not travel light. We expect rough corrugated roads. Mokas' shocks are shot. Gone. Done. End of the line. So we're replacing them with what are, undoubtedly, the best on the market for our needs. Sure they are damn expensive (30€ more, each, than brand new stock Shocks) so Alberto balled out for a set of load springs and shocks all around to cope with our load necessities. |

R O O F R A C KYes you read that right. We plan on building our own roof top tent since we can't afford a manufactured one, plus we'll know it can fit three grown men... we just won't know if it'll hold cos' Pietro wants to build it...
We will be carrying more spares and fluids as well as fuel so something will have to be stored on the roof... giving us more room inside the cab. |
S T O R A G EDRAWER SYSTEM:
We loved the Drawer system "we" Pietro built for the Magna Grecia Expedition. Its trashed now. We selected the wrong wood and rushed the job. We'll build a new one OVERHEAD CONSOLE Alberto is planning on Radio Comms, gauges, switches and gizmos, and an Overhead console to keep it tidy and rad. TRUNK DOOR COOKING STATION Unused Space? We'll find a way to make our lazy asses quality of camping improve. An aluminum panel. A swing down table to semi permanently hold our stove and basic cooking utensils... and a fire extinguisher. |
